Gulf of Mexico's Caladesi Island is nation's best beach

'Dr. Beach' says Fla.'s Caladesi Island is nation's best beach

ANTHONY McCARTNEY, Associated Press Writer

CALADESI ISLAND, Fla. - Kaylee Sturm sitting in the bottom of surfing, the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico lapping around it.

The University of Tampa senior has never been this barrier island north of Clearwater, but she and her mother were immediately impressed.

"I love that this is natural, Sturm said, adding that she preferred to other beaches on the Gulf Coast. "Water is more beautiful here."

It is an assessment that Stephen P. Leatherman agree with. Leatherman, a Florida International University professor nicknamed "Dr. Beach", Caladesi Island chosen as the best beach in the ranking of its 2008 annual list, which was published Thursday. Caladesi prevailed on the beaches of Hawaii, along the coast east and California for this year's honor.

This year's runners-Leatherman on the list of the most beautiful beaches have been Hanalei Beach, Hawaii; Siesta Beach in Sarasota, Florida; Coopers Beach in Southampton, NY; Coronado Beach in San Diego; Main Beach in East Hampton, NY; Hamoa Beach, Hawaii; Cape Hatteras, North Carolina; Cape Florida State Park, near Miami and Beachwalker Park on Kiawah Island, SC

Caladesi a short distance taken into account in the ranking Leatherman - and why Sturm and his mother, Cynde Jayden, were fascinated by it.

"It's an island getaway," said Leatherman, who has published its annual list since 1991. He noted that although in the densely populated Tampa Bay-area, close to many residents have never visited Caladesi.

Most beachgoers reach the island by a 15-minute ferry ride $ 9. Visitors - unless they bring their own boat - are limited to four hours stay at the beach, which is a national park.

Although most remote that the tourist pillars of Clearwater or Miami, Caladesi still has showers, restrooms, kayak and beach chair rentals and a snack bar where hamburgers and beer are available.

Caladesi's fine, white sand beach quartz owes its creation to 1921 a hurricane, which has separated the Honeymoon near the island. Caladesi has become a national park in 1968.

The waves are generally low on Caladesi, which adds Leatherman said his family friendly atmosphere. It uses 50 criteria - including testing of water quality, sand and services - to make its assessment.

"It is not only out and kicking sand," Leatherman said.

But for tourists.

Jayden, 52, spent a day last week trying to get a suntan before returning to his home near Pittsburgh. "I like that you can see forever," she said. "There is no world there."

Jake Wolf and Katie Pass, prospective students a dental school in the region of Kansas City, said they decided to devote part of their holidays because they were Caladesi it would be less crowded than other beaches of Gulf.

"The fact that you must take a ferry is different, a little exciting," said Pass, 25.

Caladesi, which occupies the second place in the rankings Leatherman in 2007, will now be removed from the list. Most years, he chose the beaches of Florida or Hawaii as the top-rank. He broke that trend last year by granting the first place to Ocracoke Island North Carolina Outer Banks.

Leatherman compile its list under the National Health Beaches campaign, and this year plans television special featuring the nation's most beautiful beaches, "he said.

Caladesi touts itself as "the real Florida," which is set on a path that runs through the center of the island. Palmetto brush, palm and pine trees grow sandy soil, osprey nests can be seen in the highest branches and lizards and other small animals dart through the foliage.

"It is really the idyllic environment," said Leatherman.

My Favorite Boat Drinks free recipe for your travels

My Favorite Boat Drinks free recipe for your travels

"Gentlemen, we will do boat drinks."

The Classical toast at the end of the film "Things to do in Denver when you're dead." Of course, all the characters are dead, but they finally realize their dream. Sharing boat drinks with friends on the deck of an expensive boat to the sea Jimmy Buffet had a few words to say about the boat and drinks, "Boat Drinks! The Boys in the band ordered drinks boat!" And "Waitress I need two drinks Details on the boat. Then I'm headin 'south" before my dream is shrinking. "These are words of the song named boat drinks.

A boat is drink a glass that is easily done at the stern of a boat, often extremely strong, often based rum and ordered by someone who intends to get very drunk. The most important thing on beverages boat is the fact that you have the time to get drunk and nothing more urgent to do today than sit at your friends drink beverages boat.

There is something special about boat drinks, because "boat drinks" is really a state of mind rather than a particular drink. However, I decided to answer some pressing issues on beverages boat. What makes a good boat and drink which is the best recipe? After many hours of experimentation and several major hangovers is the definitive list of the ten best recipes boat drink. For most of these drinks, a shaker is necessary, but it will not affect the flavor too if all you have is a bowl of ice, accompanied by good friends and a boat in the bay. These are in no particular order. Most of them are variations on a theme, but if I refer to someone else's recipe, I'll be sure and give them credit.

* • 1 oz amaretto
* • 1 oz Southern Comfort
* • 1 oz grenadine
* • 1 splash cranberry juice
* • 2 splashes of orange juice

Add the shaker with crushed ice, cover, shake and strain.

Singapore Sling

The Singapore Sling was created at Raffles Hotel in Singapore by the head barman certain when, during the early 1900. The original recipe was lost in the mists of time, but it was created using testimonies of bartenders, hastily jotted by a customer who asked for it, and is based on the recipe card Raffles Hotel.

Ingredients per serving:

• 30ml Gin

• 15 ml Cherry Brandy

• 120 ml of pineapple juice

• 15 ml lime juice

• 7.5 ml Cointreau

• 7.5 ml Benedictine Dom

• 10 ml Grenadine

• A dash of Angostura Bitters

• Decorate with a slice of pineapple and Cherry

Apparently, the recipe was created as a drink for women, but is now popular worldwide. Personally, I find it an acquired taste, and a little too complicated to be done. It works so well.

After such a complex recipe, here are a few simple rules.

Rum highball

• 2 oz Captain Morgan Spiced Rum

• Splash of Tonic water

• Lime

Add Captain Morgan rum spiced with a glass filled with ice. Add a splash of tonic water. Rim glass with lime. Drink. Repeat.

It does not receive much simpler than that.

Pineapple cocktail

* • 2 oz light rum
*

* • 2 oz pineapple juice
*

* • 1 / 4 oz lemon juice
*

* • 1 C. Tea simple syrup
*

• * Pineapple corner

Mix all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with a pineapple wedge.

Virgin pina colada

• 7 oz apple juice

• 2 oz cream of coconut

• crushed ice

Add all ingredients in a cocktail shaker, shake vigorously and pour. Do not strain.

And now we come to the end of the list. There can be only a better boat drink, but I could not decide between these two, here is the last of revenue.

Pina Colada

Ingredients per serving:

• 4 oz. fresh pineapple juice

• 3 oz. rum

• 2 oz. cream of coconut

How to be in Beijing Cheap Asia Travel Tips, Secrets of Seeing Beijing on the Cheap!

How to be in Beijing, Cheap

Beijing is a rather large city with 13 million inhabitants spread out over a vast area, but if you are up for it you see and do a lot of it on the cheap. From the excellent small restaurants, to the many curious shops, to the railway and bus stations, Beijing is an absolutely fascinating place to walk around and people watch.

The Chinese have the prices set for everybody for the major attractions so you do not get special tourist prices, and a lot of the prices are written down for you to see in places that you might not expect like hotels. The temples and the tourist spots have many Chinese there visiting them, and they are as interested in you as they are the cultural attraction.

Any of the markets will offered many things to sniff taste and play with. I bought some magnets that were providing hours of fun for a couple of dollars, only to have them taken away when I went to get on the plane to come home, a major bummer for me. I also bought a coffee cup that changes scenes when you put hot liquids into it.

Everything emanates from the center of town which in Beijing is The Forbidden City. Surprisingly taxis were expensive, and the buses a little hard to understand, but the metro is a breeze to use and cheap at only 3 Yuan a trip. Using only the metro does limit you a bit when you go out to the outer rings, but in the city center it will get you everywhere.

The first thing that we tried to do was go to the Great Wall at Badaling using the Beijing city buses only to find out after a day of looking that the buses were incorporated into a tourist service, and the buses we were looking for were no longer named what was on the tourist map. We spent the better part of the day looking for them, but we still had a great time as it took us places that we probably would have missed, in particular a side street that paralleled the Forbidden City that was a neighborhood of hutongs.

Inside the 2nd ring is a treasure trove of interesting things between the Forbidden City and the railway station on the south end was an old part of Beijing's city wall, a shopping maze with small stalls and little fast food noodle shops. The area around the train station had old luxury 5 star Chinese hotels, Beijing cheap guesthouses, massage centers and restaurants that for the curious offered allot of amusement in their design and function. You could spend a couple of days in this one small area and still want to go back to find more.

If there is a secret to seeing the real Beijing on the cheap it would be get lost for a few hours heading in random directions.
